BC Kimbria origins: “Gaan we door met Kimbria?”

De uitwedstrijden in de landelijke 1e klasse hebben er bij de spelers toch zo hard ingehakt dat er stemmen opgaan om te kijken of we niet in België mogen gaan spelen. Lekker veel verenigingen in de buurt, weer eens hele andere tegenstanders en ook een hoger spelniveau. Kortom veel pluspunten. De Belgen hadden geen bezwaren, maar zoals uit onderstaande brief blijkt geeft de NBB geen toestemming. Ze willen wel meedenken om de Limburgse competitie leuker te maken.

Of de start van de Rayoncompetitie in seizoen 1966/67 een gevolg is van onze actie is onwaarschijnlijk. Het is wel een frisse, nieuwe competitie, maar natuurlijk toch weer een stuk verder reizen. Het zijn weer drie uitwedstrijden in Brabant en drie in Gelderland. En door gebrek aan een sporthal in Maastricht ook nog eens acht “thuis”-wedstrijden in Nieuw Einde, Heerlen.
Het aantal leden is gezakt tot maar dertien: 10 spelers en 3 bestuursleden… En dus is het logisch dat er een Buitengewone Algemene Vergadering wordt belegd met als onderwerp: Gaan we door met Kimbria? Van de 10 spelende leden zijn er maar liefst 6 aanwezig. Onderstaand staat het originele summiere verslag van deze vergadering. En omdat het misschien niet voor iedereen helemaal duidelijk is wat er geschreven is, staat daaronder een getypte versie van het belangrijkste deel.

Voor het Bestuur is het gelukkig dus duidelijk dat die zes mensen die naar het Rayon willen (waarvan twee met een voorbehoud) een “stabiele” basis zijn om in te schrijven voor de rayoncompetitie.

En natuurlijk om door te gaan met Kimbria!!!

BC Kimbria origins: “De we keep going with Kimbria?”

The away matches in the national 1st class hit the players so hard that voices arose to look into whether we could play in Belgium instead. Plenty of clubs nearby, completely different opponents for once, and also a higher level of play. In short, lots of advantages. The Belgians had no objections, but as the letter below shows, the NBB (Dutch Basketball Federation) did not give permission. They were willing to think along to make the Limburg competition more enjoyable.

Whether the start of the Rayon competition in the 1966/67 season was a result of our campaign is unlikely. It is indeed a fresh, new competition, but of course again involves traveling a good deal further. There are again three away matches in Brabant and three in Gelderland. And due to the lack of a sports hall in Maastricht, also eight “home” matches in Nieuw Einde, Heerlen.

The number of members has dropped to just thirteen: 10 players and 3 board members…

So it’s only logical that an Extraordinary General Meeting is convened with the topic: Do we continue with Kimbria? Of the 10 playing members, no fewer than 6 are present. Below is the original brief minutes of this meeting. And since it might not be entirely clear to everyone what was written, a typed-out version of the most important part follows below.

Trainers gezocht!

Voor komend seizoen zoeken we trainers/coaches voor onder andere:

U14 gemengd
M18 jongens

Voor de U14 gemengd is er momenteel een ervaren interim-trainer aanwezig.

Je wordt dus goed op weg geholpen, wegwijs gemaakt binnen het team en krijgt de ruimte om rustig in te stappen.

Nieuwsbericht mei 2026

Hallo Kimbrianen,

Inmiddels zitten de competitiewedstrijden voor dit seizoen erop! Dat wil zeggen dat het huidige seizoen officieus is afgelopen – maar de trainingen gaan natuurlijk gewoon door tot de zomer.

Belangrijk: vanaf volgende week (week 21) zullen de plaatsvinden in de nieuwe samenstellingen voor volgend seizoen! De nieuwe teamindelingen vind je hier:

Wel hebben we nog een paar belangrijke dingen en data te vermelden. Hier volgen ze:

1. De clubdag vindt plaats op 27 juni a.s.! Ook hier is een aparte communicatie voor uitgestuurd; Inschrijven kan al via deze link:

2. De ALV staat voor nu gepland op dinsdag 30 juni – schrijf dit dus alvast in je agenda!

Tijdens die ALV zal het huidige bestuur het stokje overdragen aan het nieuwe bestuur. Belangrijk om te weten is dat het oude bestuur tot die tijd verantwoordelijk blijven voor het bestuur van de club, maar dat er wel al hecht met het nieuwe bestuur wordt samengewerkt om al door te bouwen naar volgend seizoen!

3. Er zijn ook weer de nodige vacatures te melden:

a. Nu we druk aan het voorbereiden zijn voor volgend seizoen, hebben we geconstateerd dat we toch nog een aantal personen in de technische commissiekunnen gebruiken. Ook de functie van bestuurslid Basketbalzaken is nog niet vervuld. Dit zijn posities waarin je echt een verschil kunt maken op en naast het veld – dus ben je enthousiast, aarzel niet!

b. Marja Veenstra gaat na 8 jaar stoppen als contactpersoon met de gemeente over de zaalhuur. Een belangrijke functie, waar we een goede, verantwoordelijke vervanger voor zoeken! Heb je interesse? Meld je dan bij het bestuur!

c. Ook zullen Stéphane Ummels en Daphne Kanzi hun functie als vertrouwenscontactpersonen niet verlengen. Het zou ideaal zijn als we weer een mannelijke en een vrouwelijke VCP zouden hebben. Dus ook hier: meld je aan!

d. Er zijn nog diverse plekken open voor de trainers van de jeugdteams – vraag gerust naar de mogelijkheden. Je kunt dit bijvoorbeeld ook in een duo-functie doen, zodat je de taken kunt verdelen!

4. Ook zullen er in juni nog scheidsrechterscursussen worden gegeven – met name voor de spelers die volgend seizoen voor het eerst moeten fluiten (de huidige tweedejaars U14 (geboortejaar 2012)). Wordt vervolgd!

Dit zijn de onderwerpen tot dusver. Laten we het seizoen samen netjes afronden en alles goed klaarzetten voor het nieuwe jaar!

Hello Kimbrianen,

All league games for this season have been played – this means that the current season has unofficially come to an end. Of course, practices will continue as usual until summer.

Important: starting next week (week 21), training sessions will take place in the new team lineups for next season! You can find the new team rosters here:

We do have a few important things and dates to mention. Here they are:

1. Club Day will take place on June 27! A separate communication has been sent out regarding this as well; Registration is already open here (currently in Dutch):

2. The General Members’ Meeting is currently scheduled for Tuesday, June 30—so be sure to mark this in your calendar!

During that meeting, the current board will hand over the reins to the new board. It’s important to note that the old board will remain responsible for managing the club until then, but we’re already working closely with the new board to start preparing for next season!

3. We also have various open positions to announce:

a. As we are busy preparing for next season, we have realized that we could still use a few more people on the technical committee. The position of board member for Basketball Affairs is also still open. These are roles where you can really make a difference both on and off the court—so if you’re enthusiastic, don’t hesitate!

b. Marja Veenstra is stepping down after 8 years as the liaison with the municipality regarding venue rental. This is an important role, and we’re looking for a capable, responsible replacement! Are you interested? Then please contact the board!

c. Additionally, Stéphane Ummels and Daphne Kanzi will not be renewing their terms as confidential advisors. It would be ideal if we could once again have a male and a female confidential advisor. So here too: please sign up!

d. There are still several openings for coaches of the youth teams—feel free to ask about the possibilities. You can also take on this role as part of a duo, so you can share the responsibilities!

4. Referee courses will also be held in June—specifically for players who will be refereeing for the first time next season (the current second-year U14 players born in 2012). To be continued!

BC Kimbria origins – Invoering 2e divisies

(English below)

Na de degradatie uit de 1e klasse samen met Maasvogels 1 werd de kompetitie  voor ons weer zoals voordien ook gebruikelijk: zij kampioen en wij op de 2e plek. Het was wel zo dat wij nu Maasvogels 2 steeds achter ons konden houden. 

In de loop van het seizoen 1966/67 besloot de NBB  om tussen de landelijke 1e klasse en de verschillende Districten vijf Rayonklassen (Landelijke 2e klassen) te gaan invoeren. In zo’n Rayonklasse werden over het hele land de sterkste teams van steeds drie Districten bij elkaar gebracht. In ons geval waren dit teams uit Gelderland, Limburg en Noord Brabant. In onderstaand krantenartikel werd dit haarfijn aan de lezers uitgelegd. Alle Limburgse teams van de verenigingen Heerlen, Kimbria en Maasvogels gingen hun thuiswedstrijden spelen in de voormalige Christus Koning kerk in Nieuw Einde, Heerlen. Dit was nodig omdat we in Maastricht nog altijd geen sporthal hadden… (Die “kerk” in Heerlen wordt later nog eens behandeld.)

1966-10-15

Door de invoering van de Rayoncompetitie werd op den duur het spelniveau behoorlijk opgekrikt. Op organisatorisch vlak waren er voordien al twee minstens zo belangrijke veranderingen geweest. En dat zouden niet de laatsten zijn.

  • Op zaterdag 3 december 1955 werd kort na de oprichting van Kimbria op initiatief van Maasvogels de Maastrichtse Basketball Bond (MBB) opgericht. Deelnemende verenigingen waren Kimbria, Maasvogels, Mosam, Rijkskweekschool en Huize St. Joseph. 
  • M.i.v. 1 januari 1959 is na nogal wat heen en weer correspondentie de aansluiting van de MBB bij de landelijke Nederlandse Basketball Bond (NBB) een feit. De organisatie van de competitie blijft in Limburg gebeuren.

  • Per 1 juli 1966 worden zoals hierboven gemeld vijf regionale Rayoncompetities ingevoerd. Deze landelijke 2e klassen worden georganiseerd door de NBB, de Districtscompetitie door de verschillende  Districten.
  • Op 15 september 1979 worden er ook organisatorisch vijf min of meer zelfstandige Rayons opgericht. Deze rayons gaan nu zelf de Rayoncompetities organiseren. Tegelijk worden de districten opgeheven. Deze gaan nu verder als Kernen, die niet meer rechtstreeks onder de NBB vallen. Ons Rayon Zuid heeft nu geen bemoeienis meer met de Kern Gelderland, maar krijgt daarvoor in de plaats de Kern Zeeland. De Kerncompetities worden nu ook door het Rayon georganiseerd en niet meer door de Kernen zelf.
  • In seizoen 1982/83 is de Mannen Promotiedivisie ingevoerd om de stap van de 1e divisie naar de Eredivisie te verkleinen. Later is door professionalisering de overgang vanuit de Promotiedivisie toch weer zo groot geworden dat er feitelijk geen doorstroming meer is.
  • M.i.v. 1 juli 2011 werden de “harde” Kerngrenzen losgelaten. Er waren in Limburg te weinig verenigingen en jeugdteams overgebleven om nog leuke competities te kunnen organiseren. En dus wordt vanaf nu vaker gemixt met teams uit Oost Brabant. Vooral onze meisjes zijn vaak nog maar het enige Limburgse team en dat betekent voor hun heel veel Brabantse uitwedstrijden.
  • Per 1 januari 2015 zijn de Rayons opgeheven en vallen alle clubs rechtstreeks onder de NBB. Doordat een groot aantal rayonmedewerkers nu bij het Bondsbureau zijn ondergebracht is er toch nog wel een beetje decentrale bemoeienis. De jeugdteams die in de 2e divisie spelen worden nu vaak al landelijk ingedeeld, met grote reisafstanden tot gevolg.

BC Kimbria origins – Introduction of 2nd divisions

After we got relegated from the 1st division together with Maasvogels 1, things pretty much went back to how they used to be: they became champions and we finished second. The difference now was that we could consistently keep Maasvogels 2 behind us.

During the 1966/67 season, the NBB decided to introduce five regional “Rayon” leagues (national 2nd divisions) in between the national 1st division and the various district leagues. In each Rayon league, the strongest teams from three districts across the country were grouped together. In our case, that meant teams from Gelderland, Limburg, and North Brabant. The newspaper article below explained all this in detail to readers. All Limburg teams—Heerlen, Kimbria, and Maasvogels—played their home games in the former Christus Koning church in Nieuw Einde, Heerlen. That was necessary because Maastricht still didn’t have a sports hall… (that “church” in Heerlen will come up again later).

1966-10-15

With the introduction of the Rayon competition, the overall level of play gradually improved quite a bit. On the organizational side, there had already been at least two equally important changes before this—and they wouldn’t be the last.

  • On Saturday, December 3, 1955, shortly after Kimbria was founded, the Maastricht Basketball Bond (MBB) was established at the initiative of Maasvogels. The participating clubs were Kimbria, Maasvogels, Mosam, Rijkskweekschool, and Huize St. Joseph.
  • As of January 1, 1959, after quite a bit of back-and-forth correspondence, the MBB officially became affiliated with the national Dutch Basketball Association (NBB). The organization of the competition itself, however, remained in Limburg.

  • As mentioned above, on July 1, 1966, five regional Rayon competitions were introduced. These national 2nd divisions were organized by the NBB, while the district competitions were handled by the individual districts.
  • On September 15, 1979, five more or less independent Rayons were also set up organizationally. From then on, these Rayons organized their own competitions. At the same time, the districts were abolished and continued as “Kernen” (local units), which no longer fell directly under the NBB. Our Rayon South was no longer linked to the Gelderland Kern, but instead to the Zeeland Kern. The Kern competitions were now also organized by the Rayon rather than by the Kernen themselves.
  • In the 1982/83 season, the Men’s Promotion Division was introduced to bridge the gap between the 1st division and the Eredivisie. Later, due to increasing professionalization, that gap became so large again that moving up effectively stopped being realistic.
  • As of July 1, 2011, the strict Kern boundaries were dropped. There were simply too few clubs and youth teams left in Limburg to run proper competitions. So from then on, teams were more often mixed with clubs from East Brabant. Especially our girls’ teams were often the only ones left from Limburg, which meant a lot of away games in Brabant.
  • As of January 1, 2015, the Rayons were abolished and all clubs came directly under the NBB again. Because many former Rayon staff moved into the national organization, there is still some level of decentralized involvement. Youth teams playing in the 2nd division are now often grouped on a national level, which results in long travel distances.

Nieuwsbericht maart 2026

Beste Kimbrianen,

Het einde van de speelweekenden, en dus van dit seizoen, is alweer in zicht – het gaat heel snel!

Gelukkig hebben we belangrijk en goed nieuws voor jullie, dus lees snel verder!

1. Nieuw bestuur seizoen 2026-2027

Groot nieuws: inmiddels hebben er zich voldoende mensen gemeld om een nieuw bestuur te kunnen vormen voor volgend seizoen! Voor het voortbestaan van de club is dat natuurlijk heel fijn!

De volgende mensen hebben zich gemeld: Niels Walstock (MSE3 en coach M16-1), Mike Smits (R2 en coach U12-2), Angela Gulikers (asst. Coach M16-1) en Dimitry Ummels (R3). Daarbij heeft Hugo Bertijn besloten zich ook weer beschikbaar te stellen voor het volgend seizoen. Dat betekent dus een voltallig bestuur – de functieverdeling wordt later bekend gemaakt!

Om alvast een paar speerpunten te noemen waar nu al over nagedacht wordt:

– Meer inkomsten genereren (kantine, sponsoring, activiteiten etc.);

– Het gefaseerd werken aan een gezonder en aantrekkelijker kader en vrijwilligersbeleid;

– Het verhogen van het basketbalniveau binnen Kimbria;

– Het creëren van extra (prestatieve) trainingsmogelijkheden voor specifieke spelers/groepen binnen Kimbria.

– Samen de club dragen en daarom duidelijke afspraken maken omtrent aanwezigheid verantwoording en gedrag (cultuuromslag) met bijbehorende duidelijke consequenties/handhaving.

Dat zijn natuurlijk belangrijke en grote onderwerpen, die binnenkort nader zullen worden toegelicht. Het huidige bestuur is in ieder geval dankbaar en blij dat het stokje kan worden overgedragen aan een enthousiaste, nieuwe ploeg!

2. Selectietrainingen 

Na afloop van de competitie komen er selectietrainingen voor bijna alle leeftijdscategorieën binnen de jeugd om de teamsamenstellingen voor volgend seizoen te bepalen (van U12 tot en met U22). Later volgt meer nieuws hierover.

3. Nieuwe vrijwilligers en clubtaken

Bij dit nieuwe bestuur horen natuurlijk ook een aantal nieuwe taken en invullingen. Daarnaast gaan er na dit seizoen een aantal vaste vrijwilligers stoppen met hun taken. Daarom gaan we nu al voor volgend seizoen op zoek naar (o.a.):

– leden scheidrechterscommissie en -planning;

– zalenplanning en contact met MS;

– barcommissie;

– sleutelbeheer;

– materialencommissie;

– trainers (indien gewenst kan de club ondersteunen bij het halen van trainersdiploma’s).

Dus heb je na het lezen van dit nieuws ook zin om je in te gaan zetten voor de club, meld je aan!

4. Clubdag

We hebben helaas de jubileumviering moeten laten schieten vanwege te weinig aanmeldingen. Toch willen we nu alsnog een clubdag gaan opzetten – deze zal plaatsvinden op 9 mei a.s. Met de nieuwe kantine tot onze beschikking wordt dat natuurlijk een evenement dat je niet wil missen! 

Er is al een commissie samengesteld die dit gaat organiseren; meer info volgt!

5. Algemene Ledenvergadering

Traditiegetrouw volgt er aan het einde van het seizoen een Algemene Ledenvergadering, waarin dit seizoen wordt afgesloten en we vooruitblikken op de volgende jaargang. Uiteraard wordt daarbij ook het nieuwe bestuur gepresenteerd. De definitieve datum volgt nog.

We kunnen dus blijven doorbouwen aan onze mooie club! We zien jullie hopelijk snel weer op de velden en bij de clubdag!

Newsletter March 2026Dear Kimbrianen,

The end of the game weekends – and this season – is already in sight. Time is flying by!

Fortunately, we have some important and good news for you, so please read on!

1. New board for the 2026–2027 season

Big news: enough people have now come forward to form a new board for next season! This is, of course, excellent news for the club’s future!

The following people have come forward: Niels Walstock (MSE3 and coach M16-1), Mike Smits (R2 and coach U12-2), Angela Gulikers (assistant coach M16-1) and Dimitry Ummels (R3). In addition, Hugo Bertijn has decided to make himself available again for next season. This means we have a full board – the allocation of roles will be announced later!

To mention a few key priorities that are already being considered:

– Generating more income (canteen, sponsorship, activities, etc.);

– Working in phases towards a healthier and more attractive management and volunteer policy;

– Raising the standard of basketball within Kimbria;

– Creating additional (performance-oriented) training opportunities for specific players/groups within Kimbria.

– Supporting the club together and establishing clear agreements regarding attendance, accountability and behaviour (cultural shift) with corresponding clear consequences/enforcement.

These are, of course, important and significant issues, which will be explained in more detail at a later stage. In any case, the current board is grateful and delighted to be able to hand over the reins to an enthusiastic new team!

2. Selection training sessions

Following the end of the league season, there will be selection training sessions for almost all age groups within the youth setup to determine the team line-ups for next season (from U12 to U22). More news on this will follow later.

3. New volunteers and club roles

This new board naturally entails a number of new roles and responsibilities. In addition, a number of regular volunteers will be stepping down from their roles after this season. We are therefore already looking for the following for next season (among others):

– members of the referees’ committee and scheduling;

– court scheduling and liaison with MS;

– bar committee;

– key management;

– equipment committee;

– coaches (if you like, the club can provide support in obtaining coaching qualifications).

So if, after reading this news, you feel like getting involved with the club, please sign up!

4. Club Day

Unfortunately, we had to cancel the anniversary celebrations due to a lack of registrations. Nevertheless, we still want to organise a Club Day – this will take place on 9 May. With the new canteen at our disposal, this will of course be an event you won’t want to miss!

A committee has already been formed to organise this; more information to follow!

5. General Members’ Meeting

As is tradition, a General Members’ Meeting (ALV) will follow at the end of the season, during which we will wrap up this season and look ahead to the next one. Naturally, the new board will also be presented at this meeting. The final date is yet to be confirmed.

In other words: we can continue to build on our wonderful club! We hope to see you all again soon on the courts and at the club day!
