Origins

Na de degradatie uit de 1^e klasse samen met Maasvogels 1 werd de kompetitie  voor ons weer zoals voordien ook gebruikelijk: zij kampioen en wij op de 2e plek. Het was wel zo dat wij nu Maasvogels 2 steeds achter ons konden houden. 

In de loop van het seizoen 1966/67 besloot de NBB  om tussen de landelijke 1^e klasse en de verschillende Districten vijf Rayonklassen (Landelijke 2^e klassen) te gaan invoeren. In zo’n Rayonklasse werden over het hele land de sterkste teams van steeds drie Districten bij elkaar gebracht. In ons geval waren dit teams uit Gelderland, Limburg en Noord Brabant. In onderstaand krantenartikel werd dit haarfijn aan de lezers uitgelegd. Alle Limburgse teams van de verenigingen Heerlen, Kimbria en Maasvogels gingen hun thuiswedstrijden spelen in de voormalige Christus Koning kerk in Nieuw Einde, Heerlen. Dit was nodig omdat we in Maastricht nog altijd geen sporthal hadden… (Die “kerk” in Heerlen wordt later nog eens behandeld.)

Door de invoering van de Rayoncompetitie werd op den duur het spelniveau behoorlijk opgekrikt. Op organisatorisch vlak waren er voordien al twee minstens zo belangrijke veranderingen geweest. En dat zouden niet de laatsten zijn.

• Op zaterdag 3 december 1955 werd kort na de oprichting van Kimbria op initiatief van Maasvogels de Maastrichtse Basketball Bond (MBB) opgericht. Deelnemende verenigingen waren Kimbria, Maasvogels, Mosam, Rijkskweekschool en Huize St. Joseph. 
• M.i.v. 1 januari 1959 is na nogal wat heen en weer correspondentie de aansluiting van de MBB bij de landelijke Nederlandse Basketball Bond (NBB) een feit. De organisatie van de competitie blijft in Limburg gebeuren.

• Per 1 juli 1966 worden zoals hierboven gemeld vijf regionale Rayoncompetities ingevoerd. Deze landelijke 2^e klassen worden georganiseerd door de NBB, de Districtscompetitie door de verschillende  Districten.
• Op 15 september 1979 worden er ook organisatorisch vijf min of meer zelfstandige Rayons opgericht. Deze rayons gaan nu zelf de Rayoncompetities organiseren. Tegelijk worden de districten opgeheven. Deze gaan nu verder als Kernen, die niet meer rechtstreeks onder de NBB vallen. Ons Rayon Zuid heeft nu geen bemoeienis meer met de Kern Gelderland, maar krijgt daarvoor in de plaats de Kern Zeeland. De Kerncompetities worden nu ook door het Rayon georganiseerd en niet meer door de Kernen zelf.
• In seizoen 1982/83 is de Mannen Promotiedivisie ingevoerd om de stap van de 1^e divisie naar de Eredivisie te verkleinen. Later is door professionalisering de overgang vanuit de Promotiedivisie toch weer zo groot geworden dat er feitelijk geen doorstroming meer is.
• M.i.v. 1 juli 2011 werden de “harde” Kerngrenzen losgelaten. Er waren in Limburg te weinig verenigingen en jeugdteams overgebleven om nog leuke competities te kunnen organiseren. En dus wordt vanaf nu vaker gemixt met teams uit Oost Brabant. Vooral onze meisjes zijn vaak nog maar het enige Limburgse team en dat betekent voor hun heel veel Brabantse uitwedstrijden.
• Per 1 januari 2015 zijn de Rayons opgeheven en vallen alle clubs rechtstreeks onder de NBB. Doordat een groot aantal rayonmedewerkers nu bij het Bondsbureau zijn ondergebracht is er toch nog wel een beetje decentrale bemoeienis. De jeugdteams die in de 2^e divisie spelen worden nu vaak al landelijk ingedeeld, met grote reisafstanden tot gevolg.

BC Kimbria origins – Introduction of 2nd divisions

After we got relegated from the 1st division together with Maasvogels 1, things pretty much went back to how they used to be: they became champions and we finished second. The difference now was that we could consistently keep Maasvogels 2 behind us.

During the 1966/67 season, the NBB decided to introduce five regional “Rayon” leagues (national 2nd divisions) in between the national 1st division and the various district leagues. In each Rayon league, the strongest teams from three districts across the country were grouped together. In our case, that meant teams from Gelderland, Limburg, and North Brabant. The newspaper article below explained all this in detail to readers. All Limburg teams—Heerlen, Kimbria, and Maasvogels—played their home games in the former Christus Koning church in Nieuw Einde, Heerlen. That was necessary because Maastricht still didn’t have a sports hall… (that “church” in Heerlen will come up again later).

With the introduction of the Rayon competition, the overall level of play gradually improved quite a bit. On the organizational side, there had already been at least two equally important changes before this—and they wouldn’t be the last.

• On Saturday, December 3, 1955, shortly after Kimbria was founded, the Maastricht Basketball Bond (MBB) was established at the initiative of Maasvogels. The participating clubs were Kimbria, Maasvogels, Mosam, Rijkskweekschool, and Huize St. Joseph.
• As of January 1, 1959, after quite a bit of back-and-forth correspondence, the MBB officially became affiliated with the national Dutch Basketball Association (NBB). The organization of the competition itself, however, remained in Limburg.

• As mentioned above, on July 1, 1966, five regional Rayon competitions were introduced. These national 2nd divisions were organized by the NBB, while the district competitions were handled by the individual districts.
• On September 15, 1979, five more or less independent Rayons were also set up organizationally. From then on, these Rayons organized their own competitions. At the same time, the districts were abolished and continued as “Kernen” (local units), which no longer fell directly under the NBB. Our Rayon South was no longer linked to the Gelderland Kern, but instead to the Zeeland Kern. The Kern competitions were now also organized by the Rayon rather than by the Kernen themselves.
• In the 1982/83 season, the Men’s Promotion Division was introduced to bridge the gap between the 1st division and the Eredivisie. Later, due to increasing professionalization, that gap became so large again that moving up effectively stopped being realistic.
• As of July 1, 2011, the strict Kern boundaries were dropped. There were simply too few clubs and youth teams left in Limburg to run proper competitions. So from then on, teams were more often mixed with clubs from East Brabant. Especially our girls’ teams were often the only ones left from Limburg, which meant a lot of away games in Brabant.
• As of January 1, 2015, the Rayons were abolished and all clubs came directly under the NBB again. Because many former Rayon staff moved into the national organization, there is still some level of decentralized involvement. Youth teams playing in the 2nd division are now often grouped on a national level, which results in long travel distances.

Wij waren ingedeeld in de 1^e klasse B en dit betekende dat wij uitreizen moesten maken naar Amsterdam (2x), Haarlem (2x), den Haag, Leiden, Vlaardingen, den Bosch en naar Maasvogels aan de Mergelweg, Maastricht. De Bond snapte ook wel dat dit wel wat veel was en gaf heel genereus 250 gulden subsidie voor de reiskosten. Dit was natuurlijk bij lange na niet genoeg en daarom besloten de spelers van Heren 1 om gezamenlijk een krantenwijk te gaan doen! Dit betekende dat ze bij toerbeurt in alle vroegte vóór naar het werk of school te gaan eerst in Malpertuis 300 kranten moesten bezorgen. Maar ja, alles voor het goede doel.

En dan zeg je misschien wel: “Nou ja, in seizoen 2016/17 moesten de meisjes U18 (!) zelfs 13 keer het hele land door!” Ja dat is ook heftig, maar “vroeger was alles toch veel erger”. Op de eerste plaats had de bond weliswaar subsidie gegeven, maar voor de tijdstippen van onze uitwedstrijden weigerde ze ons ook maar een beetje tegemoet te komen. Om zeven uur en half acht in Amsterdam aantreden, om half acht in Haarlem en om half negen in Den Bosch. Allemaal wedstrijden die niet met de trein bezocht konden worden. Dus moest er een busje gehuurd worden. Wel duur, maar daar hadden we natuurlijk wel voor gewerkt. En bovendien was het zo met zijn allen in het busje ook wel knotsgezellig.

Bovendien had je de tijd aan jezelf en kon je het zo laat maken als je wilde. Zo waren we er wel in geslaagd om de beide Haarlem-wedstrijden op één dag te mogen spelen: tegen H.O.C. om 14.00u (84-35 verloren) en tegen Typhoons om 19.00u (52-35 verloren). We waren hierdoor zo depri dat we besloten ons verdriet te gaan verdrinken in Amsterdam. Toen we daar het café uit rolden om naar het busje te gaan was het zo laat dat we “de Stille Omgang” tegen kwamen. Een katholieke processie waar nu altijd nog duizenden pelgrims aan meedoen en waarin niet gesproken of gezongen mag worden.

Wat de ritten met het busje extra moeilijk maakte was dat de autoweg vanaf Roermond nog niet klaar was. Vanaf daar moest je verder over de Rijksweg kruipen. Bovendien staat de winter van 1963 bekend als een van de zwaarste van de vorige eeuw. Denk maar eens aan de Elfstedentocht van Reinier Paping. In dat jaar lag er van Kerstmis ’62 tot maart 63 sneeuw en de temperatuur kwam gedurende drie maanden niet boven nul uit!! Legendarisch is in dit verband onze wedstrijd tegen Te Werve in de Hourusthal in Den Haag. Die hal had aan een lange zijde een wand van slechts twee meter hoog en verder was hij tot aan het plafond gewoon open. Na vijf minuten begon het te sneeuwen en je kunt je voorstellen dat het veld aan die kant onbespeelbaar werd. Kennelijk gebeurde dat daar wel vaker, want over staken van de wedstrijd werd niet gesproken. Wij waren al lang blij. Anders hadden we die trip nog eens moeten maken. Een groot verschil met nu is ook dat wij geen mobieltje hadden. Dus ook geen navigatie. Alles moest nog met wegenkaarten en straatnamenboeken. Wat dit betekent kun je lezen in onderstaand krantenverslag van de wedstrijd Kimbria – Typhoons. Zij moesten met de politie naar de Hoogbrugstraat geloodst worden!

Maar hoe verging het ons nu eigenlijk sportief gezien? In het begin ging het best wel redelijk. Zeker thuis waar de tegenstanders veel moeite hadden met ons veld. De eerste thuiswedstrijd tegen E.B.B.C. (het huidige Heroes Den Bosch, winnaar van 18 landstitels…) ging nog verloren met 37-38. De twee volgende werden gewonnen waarvan je hieronder van eentje het verslag kunt lezen. Maar toen was de koek op en werden alle wedstrijden verloren. Gaandeweg het seizoen veranderde onze yell indachtig onze krantenwijk dan ook in

GEZÈT, GEZÈT, GEZÈT, HEI KRIEGE VEER WEER ’N TÈT!!

Uiteindelijk eindigden we op de tiende en laatste plaats. Maasvogels deed het niet veel beter en werd negende. Het resultaat was dat alle twee de Maastrichtse ploegen weer degradeerden naar het District Limburg. Jammer, maar wel heel wat ervaringen rijker.

BC Kimbria origins – The National 1st class B: what an experience!

We were placed in the 1st division B, which meant we had to travel to Amsterdam (twice), Haarlem (twice), The Hague, Leiden, Vlaardingen, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and Maasvogels on Mergelweg in Maastricht. The federation understood this was a bit much and generously provided a 250-guilder subsidy for travel expenses. This, of course, wasn’t nearly enough, so the Men’s 1 players decided to do a paper round together! This meant they took turns delivering 300 newspapers in Malpertuis early in the morning before going to work or school. But hey, it was all for a good cause.

And then you might say: “Well, in the 2016/17 season, the U18 girls (!) even had to travel across the country 13 times!” Yes, that’s tough, but “everything used to be much worse.” First of all, the association had indeed subsidized our matches, but they refused to budge even a little on the times of our away games. We had to play at 7:00 and 7:30 in Amsterdam, 7:30 in Haarlem, and 8:30 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. All these games couldn’t be attended by train. So we had to rent a van. It was expensive, but we’d certainly worked for it. And besides, it was incredibly cozy all together in the van.

Plus, you had the time to yourself and could stay up as late as you liked. That’s how we managed to play both Haarlem matches in one day: against H.O.C. at 2:00 PM (we lost 84-35) and against Typhoons at 7:00 PM (we lost 52-35). We were so depressed that we decided to drown our sorrows in Amsterdam. When we rolled out of the café to go to the van, it was so late that we came across “de Stille Omgang” (the Silent Procession). A Catholic procession that still draws thousands of pilgrims, and in which no speaking or singing is permitted.

What made the bus journeys particularly difficult was that the highway from Roermond wasn’t finished yet. From there, you had to crawl further along the highway. Moreover, the winter of 1963 is known as one of the harshest of the last century. Just think of Reinier Paping’s Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour). That year, there was snow from Christmas ’62 to March ’63, and the temperature didn’t rise above freezing for three months! Our match against Te Werve in the Hourusthal in The Hague is legendary in this regard. That hall had a wall only two meters high on one long side, and the rest was open all the way to the ceiling. After five minutes, it started snowing, and you can imagine the field on that side became unplayable. Apparently, that happened often there, because there was no talk of abandoning the match. We were already happy. Otherwise, we would have had to make that trip again. A big difference from now is that we didn’t have cell phones. So no navigation either. Everything still had to be done with road maps and street names. You can read what this meant in the newspaper report below of the Kimbria – Typhoons match. They had to be escorted to Hoogbrugstraat by the police!

But how did we fare, actually, from a sporting perspective? Initially, things went quite well. Especially at home, where our opponents had a lot of trouble with our field. The first home game against E.B.B.C. (now Heroes Den Bosch, winner of 18 national titles…) was lost 37-38. The next two were won, one of which you can read the report of below. But then it was all over and we lost all the matches. As the season progressed, our yell, mindful of our paper round, changed to:
“Alright, alright, alright — here we go again, we’re getting another round!”

We ultimately finished in tenth and last place. Maasvogels didn’t fare much better, finishing ninth. As a result, both Maastricht teams were relegated to the Limburg District. A shame, but a lot richer in experience.

Voor het spelen van de wedstrijden in de Landelijke 1^e klasse werd de KNP-zaal afgekeurd. Te gevaarlijk. Er was in Maastricht geen echte sporthal en dus moest iets anders gezocht worden. Uiteindelijk werd besloten uit te wijken naar het WIMA-terrein, een buitenterrein gelegen in de grote tuin van het Sint Martinus Buurthuis, Hoogbrugstraat 42, Maastricht.

Hier werden al een aantal jaren wedstrijden gespeeld door de vereniging WIMA. Hiervan waren met name mannen/jongens uit de buurt lid. Het gebouw staat er nog altijd (zie onderstaande foto) en het huidige Martinushuis heeft nog altijd een maatschappelijke functie voor de opvang van jongeren. Op het toenmalige WIMA-terrein staat tegenwoordig een hoog appartementengebouw. 

Wij kenden dit terrein met een vloer van hier en daar ongelijke trottoirtegels dus wel een beetje. En het was geen probleem om af en toe in de buitenlucht te moeten spelen. Al was het super vervelend als je in volle vaart een lay up wilde gaan scoren en de bal plotseling in een waterplas morsdood bleef liggen. Maar toen Maasvogels besloot dat wij ook niet meer in de KNP-zaal mochten trainen werd dat een ander verhaal. Er was schijnbaar geen plaats meer voor Kimbria omdat er te veel Maasvogels teams kwamen.

Nu waren we gedwongen om week in week uit ook buiten te gaan trainen. Er was weliswaar voor ’s avonds terreinverlichting, maar die paar lampen gaven echt niet genoeg licht. Bovendien hielpen ze natuurlijk niet tegen regen en sneeuw. Het trainingsbezoek holde dan ook  hard achteruit; zeker ’s winters.

Trainingen met maar twee man waren zeker geen uitzondering, maar ja, dat waren aanstaande zwagers van elkaar en die wilden elkaar niet in de steek laten… Maar zoals je op de foto hieronder kunt zien was het natuurlijk wel geweldig om ’s zomers buiten te spelen. Hoe fijn we dat vonden blijkt ook uit het feit dat we in de grote schoolvakanties meer dan vijftig jaar lang op buitenveldjes getraind hebben. Dat was dan voor alle leden door elkaar: jong en oud, vrouwen en mannen. 

Het veld was niet het enige waar wij ons mee moesten behelpen. Zo moesten we ons omkleden in de grote zaal van het buurthuis. Zeker na de wedstrijd gebeurde dat samen met de tegenstanders. Dus als het een felle wedstrijd was geweest was de sfeer wel eens gespannen. Je kleren moest je maar over een stoel of over een tafel leggen. Douchen kon alleen maar in de twee douches, die in het WC-blok zaten. Daarna gezellig wat nakletsen kon onder het genot van…een beker water. En je snapt dat dit vrijwel niet gebeurde.

Bovendien was het natuurlijk niet gastvrij t.o.v. van onze tegenstanders, die voornamelijk uit het westen van het land kwamen. Maastricht had gelukkig wel voldoende cafés en daar maakten zij dan ook ruim gebruik van. Ze moesten tenslotte nog een “wereldreis” terug naar huis maken…

BC Kimbria origins – To the WIMA site

The KNP hall was rejected for playing matches in the National First Division. It was deemed too dangerous. Maastricht lacked a proper sports hall, so something else had to be found. Ultimately, it was decided to move to the WIMA grounds, an outdoor area located in the large garden of the Sint Martinus Community Center, Hoogbrugstraat 42, Maastricht. The WIMA club had been playing matches here for several years.

Members were primarily men and boys from the neighborhood. The building still stands (see photo below), and the current Martinus House still serves a social function, providing shelter for young people. A tall apartment building now stands on the former WIMA grounds.

We were quite familiar with this area, with its floor of uneven paving stones. And it wasn’t a problem to occasionally have to play outdoors. Although it was incredibly frustrating when you were about to score a layup at full speed and the ball suddenly stopped dead in a puddle. But when Maasvogels decided we were no longer allowed to train in the KNP hall, things changed. Apparently, there was no room for Kimbria anymore because too many Maasvogels teams were coming. Now we were forced to train outside week after week.

While there were field lights for the evenings, those few lamps really didn’t provide enough light. Moreover, they certainly didn’t help with rain and snow. Training attendance plummeted, especially in the winter. Training sessions with just two people were certainly not uncommon. But then again, they were brothers-in-law, and they didn’t want to let each other down… But as you can see in the photo below, it was certainly wonderful to play outside in the summer.

How much we enjoyed it is also evident from the fact that we trained on outdoor fields during the summer holidays for over fifty years. All members were mixed: young and old, women and men.

The field wasn’t the only thing we had to make do with. We had to change in the main hall of the community center. Especially after the match, this happened together with the opponents. So if it had been a fierce match, the atmosphere could sometimes be tense. You had to spread your clothes over a chair or a table. Showers were only allowed in the two showers located in the toilet block.

Afterward, we could chat pleasantly while enjoying… a cup of water. And you can imagine that this hardly happened. Moreover, it was, of course, inhospitable to our opponents, who mainly came from the west of the country. Fortunately, Maastricht had plenty of cafes, and they made ample use of them. After all, they still had a “world trip” to make back home…

In de eerste jaren van ons bestaan moest Kimbria heel lang opboksen tegen het oppermachtige Maasvogels. Dit kwam deels doordat die club er toen al niet voor terugschrok om sterke spelers van andere clubs aan te trekken! Zo speelden er in Maasvogels 1 jarenlang twee jongens uit Heerlen en een hele goede Turkse student die in Aken studeerde. Wrang was dat deze was “ontdekt” door een Kimbriaan, die zelf ook in Aken op de Hochschule zat. Maar Kimbria kon de Turkse jongen niet bieden wat Maasvogels wèl kon. In latere jaren hebben we hetzelfde probleem met Weert gehad dat menige goede speler bij ons wegplukte… 

Met hulp van deze vreemdelingen werd Maasvogels ook in seizoen 1959/60 kampioen en promoveerde naar de landelijke 1^e divisie. Dit maakte voor Kimbria de weg naar het kampioenschap vrij. Maar het seizoen erna was ook Maasvogels 2 nog te sterk en werden wij tweede. Hierdoor hadden we gelukkig wel recht op het spelen van een promotiewedstrijd voor die 1^edivisie tegen de Delta Daggers. Dit team bestond geheel uit Amerikaanse militairen, die gelegerd waren op de vliegbasis Soesterberg waar de Delta Dagger vliegtuigen gestationeerd waren. Ze waren gelukkig niet heel getalenteerd, maar waren toch met 46-35 veel te sterk voor ons. Kimbria diende m.b.t. deze wedstrijd liefst 5 protesten in, maar deze werden allemaal afgewezen.

In het seizoen 1961/62 moest het dan maar gebeuren en deze keer lukte het om Maasvogels 2 achter ons te houden. De eerste wedstrijd werd met 64-78 verloren, maar de tweede wonnen wij met een onbegrijpelijke 28-22 (???). Dit is extra onbegrijpelijk omdat tijdens dit seizoen vier keer met meer dan 100 punten gewonnen werd. De grootste uitschieter was de 185-20 tegen het zwakke Wima 2, de grootste overwinning ooit door een Kimbria team behaald. Uiteindelijk hadden wij na 14 wedstrijden 24 punten; twee meer dan Maasvogels 2. Op onderstaande foto’s staan de matadoren afgebeeld. Let vooral ook op de “professionele” uitstraling van de tenues.

Door dit kampioenschap mochten we opnieuw promotiewedstrijden voor de landelijke 1^e divisie gaan spelen. Thuis tegen Almonte, dat we later nog heel vaak zouden tegenkomen, werd gewonnen met 44-24. De uitwedstrijd tegen AMVJ Rotterdam wonnen we met een even onbegrijpelijke 21-24 en hierdoor promoveerden we naar de landelijke 1^e divisie. Dit was de klasse direct onder de Eredivisie, want de huidige Promotiedivisie bestond toen nog niet. 

Dus had Maastricht nu na Maasvogels twee basketbalploegen die op dit hoge niveau speelden!!!

BC Kimbria origins – season 1961-62: Kimbria 1 champions; Finally.

In our early years, Kimbria had to compete with the dominant Maasvogels for a long time. This was partly because that club, even then, wasn’t afraid to sign strong players from other clubs! For years, Maasvogels 1 featured two boys from Heerlen and a very good Turkish student studying in Aachen. Ironically, he was “discovered” by a Kimbrian, who himself was also attending the Aachen University of Applied Sciences. But Kimbria couldn’t offer the Turkish boy what Maasvogels could. In later years, we had the same problem with Weert, which led to many good players being plucked from us.

With the help of these foreigners, Maasvogels also became champions in the 1959/60 season and were promoted to the national 1st division. This paved the way for Kimbria to the championship. But the following season, Maasvogels 2 was also too strong, and we finished second. Fortunately, this earned us a spot in a promotion match for the 1st division against the Delta Daggers. This team consisted entirely of American soldiers stationed at Soesterberg Air Base, where the Delta Dagger aircraft were stationed. While they weren’t particularly talented, they still defeated us 46-35, which was far too strong for us. Kimbria filed no fewer than five protests regarding this match, but all were rejected.

In the 1961/62 season, it finally happened, and this time we managed to keep Maasvogels 2 behind us. We lost the first match 64-78, but we won the second by an incomprehensible 28-22 (???). This is especially incomprehensible because we won by more than 100 points four times during that season. The biggest victory was the 185-20 victory against the weak Wima 2, the biggest victory ever achieved by a Kimbria team. Ultimately, after 14 matches, we had 24 points; two more than Maasvogels 2. The photos below depict the matadors. Note the “professional” look of the uniforms.

This championship allowed us to play promotion matches for the national 1st division again. At home against Almonte, a team we would face many times later, we won 44-24. We won the away match against AMVJ Rotterdam with an equally incomprehensible 21-24, thus securing promotion to the national 1st division. This was the division directly below the Eredivisie, as the current Promotion Division did not yet exist.

So, after Maasvogels, Maastricht now had two basketball teams playing at this high level!

Eind 1957 meldden zich een stel jeugdige nieuwe leden aan, die op school met basketbal kennis hadden gemaakt. En die nu bij een echte club echte wedstrijden wilden gaan spelen. Kennelijk meldden zich ook bij de andere clubs een heleboel nieuwe leden aan, want op 10 maart 1958 startte de Limburgse Basketballbond met een nieuwe 3^eklasse. In die klasse kwamen uit: 

• Kimbria IV en Kimbria V
• Maasvogels VII en VIII (teams van de Papierfabriek)
• KHBS Wijk II (van de voorloper van het huidige Sint Maartenscollege)
• D.B.S.V. II (van de nu nog  bestaande Don Bosco Sport Vereniging uit het Heugemerveld)
• Heerlense Bernardinus II (van het gelijknamige Bernardinus College)

De spelers van Kimbria IV waren zo goed op elkaar ingespeeld dat het team na 10 wedstrijden (vanaf maart hè) ongeslagen kampioen werd. De eerste kampioen in de historie van Kimbria.

Het is onduidelijk of het als beloning voor dit kampioenschap was, maar op Koninginnedag 30-04-1959 mochten ze hun kunsten op het Vrijthof vertonen. Bovenstaande foto is toen genomen. Ook dat toernooi wonnen ze. De spelers waren allemaal studenten van het gerenommeerde Henric van Veldekecollege (tegenwoordig het Trichter college).

In 1960 deden ze allemaal examen en gingen ze ergens in het land verder studeren. Twee ervan schopten het zelfs tot professor! Dat studeren was voor de leden natuurlijk schitterend, maar voor Kimbria betekende het een leegloop van een hoop getalenteerde basketballers. En dat zou de club tot op de dag vandaag parten blijven spelen: bij de overgang van junioren naar senioren stoppen er steeds weer (te) veel leden omdat ze elders gaan studeren…

BC Kimbria origins – season 1957-1958: The first Kimbria champions

At the end of 1957, a group of young new members signed up, having been introduced to basketball at school. They now wanted to play real matches with a real club. Apparently, many new members also signed up at the other clubs, because on March 10, 1958, the Limburg Basketball Association launched a new third division. The following teams competed in this division:

• Kimbria IV and Kimbria V
• Maasvogels VII and VIII (teams from De Papierfabriek)
• KHBS Wijk II (from the predecessor of the current Sint Maartenscollege)
• D.B.S.V. II (from the still-existing Don Bosco Sports Association in Heugemerveld)
• Bernardinus II from Heerlen (from the Bernardinus College of the same name)

The Kimbria IV players were so well-coordinated that the team became undefeated champions after 10 games (starting in March, of course). The first champions in Kimbria’s history.

It’s unclear whether it was a reward for this championship, but on Queen’s Day, April 30, 1959, they were allowed to show off their skills on the Vrijthof square. The photo above was taken then. They won that tournament as well. The players were all students at the renowned Henric van Veldeke College (now Trichter College).

In 1960, they all graduated and went on to further their studies elsewhere in the country. Two of them even became professors! While studying was certainly wonderful for the members, for Kimbria it meant a drain on many talented basketball players. And that continues to plague the club to this day: when transitioning from junior to senior level, (too) many members consistently quit because they go elsewhere…

Zoals vorige keer gezegd kun je op de foto vanaf de brug over het Bassin de KNP-zaal van Maasvogels zien liggen. Maar als je dat zelf wel eens wil zien dan moet je daar wel niet te lang mee wachten, want ze gaan hem afbreken. De gemeente wil de Maasboulevard verder gaan verlengen en dan ligt deze zaal (=de Affuitenloods) in de weg. Die Affuitenloods werd in 1825 gebouwd om de onderstellen van de kanonnen van het kortbij gelegen fort in op te slaan. 

Later nam de KNP de loods over en werd een deel ervan in gebruik als sportzaal voor de interne opleiding van de papieroperators. Grappig is dat meer dan honderd jaar na de opslag in die loods van de onderdelen van kanonnen, de basketballers er hun kanonskogels van afstandsschoten los lieten.

In de beginjaren was deze zaal voor Kimbria heel belangrijk. Er werd in getraind en ook werden er alle wedstrijden gespeeld. En dat ondanks de speciale eigenschappen die de zaal had. Het meest opvallende was wel dat er op zo’n drie meter hoogte drie zware eiken balken hingen: eentje in het midden en twee net boven de vrije worplijnen. Dus als je een vrije worp kreeg dan moest je even door de knieën gaan en tamelijk vlak schieten, want anders raakte je de balk. Op de foto is de balk heel goed zichtbaar. Overbodig om te zeggen dat een fast break met een lange pass natuurlijk echt niet mogelijk was. Afstandsschoten gebeurden door OVER de balk te schieten en die waren eigenlijk gedoemd om te mislukken.

Zoals ook te zien is lag er in de zaal een parketvloer, die meestal nogal glad was vanwege het stof dat er op lag. De zaal was heel klein en dus waren er geen buitenlijnen: de muur was “uit”. De jurytafel was een vensterbank waar het sheet en de klok op lagen. De wisselspelers stonden langs de kant en gelukkig was er vrijwel nooit publiek. Opvallend was ook dat als je van buiten kwam je meteen in de zaal stond als je door de buitendeur kwam!  De meneer met hoed helemaal links op de foto is dan ook net met “de deur in de zaal gevallen”. De spelers van de volgende wedstrijd, die zich wilden omkleden, moesten wachten tot er een aanval aan de andere kant was en dan snel oversteken.

Opvallend op de foto is ook nog dat er met een ECHTE leren bal gespeeld werd. Die waren niet veel zwaarder dan de huidige zogenaamde leren ballen. Maar toen we later op een buitenterrein gingen spelen werd hij bij regenweer werd echt wel veel zwaarder…

BC Kimbria origins – the KNP hall of Maasvogels

As mentioned last time, you can see the Maasvogels KNP hall in the photo from the bridge over the Bassin. But if you’d like to see it for yourself, you shouldn’t wait too long, because they’re going to demolish it. The municipality wants to extend the Maasboulevard further, and this hall (the Affuitenloods) will be in the way. The Affuitenloods was built in 1825 to store the cannon mounts from the nearby fort.

Later, the KNP took over the warehouse and used part of it as a sports hall for the internal training of the paper operators. Interestingly, more than a hundred years after the cannon parts were stored in that warehouse, the basketball players were launching their long-range cannonballs there.

In the early years, this hall was very important to Kimbria. Training was done there, and all matches were played there. And this despite the hall’s unique features. The most striking feature was the three heavy oak beams hanging about three meters high: one in the middle and two just above the free-throw lines. So, if you got a free throw, you had to bend your knees and shoot fairly flat, otherwise you’d hit the beam. The beam is clearly visible in the photo. Needless to say, a fast break with a long pass was, of course, simply impossible. Long shots were made by shooting OVER the beam, and those were practically doomed to fail.

As can also be seen, the hall had a parquet floor, which was usually quite slippery due to the dust. The hall was very small, so there were no outside lines: the wall was “outside.” The scorer’s table was a windowsill on which the scoresheet and clock rested. The substitutes stood on the sidelines, and thankfully, there were hardly any spectators. It was also striking that if you came from outside, you were immediately inside the hall as soon as you entered through the front door! The man with the hat on the far left in the photo has just “fallen out of the door.” The players for the next match, who wanted to change, had to wait until an attack on the other side and then quickly cross to the other side of the hall.

It’s also striking in the photo that they were playing with a REAL leather ball. Those weren’t much heavier than the current so-called leather balls. But when we later started playing outdoors, it became much heavier in rainy weather…
